Most people tend to associate Japanese tattoos with the infamous Yakuza , members of traditional organized crime groups in Japan. However, Japanese tattoo history and traditions go way beyond criminal organizations.
Like most cultures, the Japanese have a very traditional and distinctive style of tattoo art. This traditional style or art of hand tattooing is referred to as Tebori (as against Yobori, tattooing with a machine). Multiple tattoo needles are tied in a line on a flat end of a bamboo stick which rests on the thumb of the left hand while it is pushed repetitively into the skin by the right hand.
The experts say that using Tebori it is possible to create gradations of tone that are difficult to emulate with a tattoo machine. You can see the Tebori technique in this video of Hoi Yen tattooing a tiger.
